Craig Redman & Karl Maier
Double Vision 2025. Griffith University Art Museum.
Multi-venue collaboration with Brisbane City Council, Brisbane Festival and Fish Lane Arts Precinct.
In 1996, Craig Redman and Karl Maier first teamed up after meeting as students at what is now the Queensland College of Art & Design (QCAD), Griffith University, Brisbane. Initially gaining attention as co-founders of design collective Rinzen, they established themselves as collaborative duo Craig & Karl in 2011, marking the beginning of what would become one of Queensland’s most internationally successful creative exports.
Double Vision at Griffith University Art Museum, South Bank serves as the cornerstone of a dynamic multi-venue spectacle across Southeast Queensland, celebrating almost 30 years of shared creative vision. This Australian exclusive exhibition charts key motifs and moments in the development of Craig & Karl’s idiosyncratic art and design practice through a comprehensive timeline of projects, archival material displays, and selected merchandise from their extensive collaborations. The exhibition features installations and sculptural elements that explore recurring themes of community, identity, imagination, and love.
This project coincides with Griffith University’s 50th anniversary celebrations, creating a citywide Craig & Karl takeover that includes a new iteration of their iconic inflatable Mateys. These works debut during Brisbane Festival before appearing across the University’s six locations in Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast. A specially commissioned immersive installation for Fish Lane Arts Precinct was created with assistance from students from the Queensland College of Art & Design’s LiveArt course, demonstrating the ongoing connection between the artists and their alma mater.
Craig & Karl’s dynamic designs and signature message of humour, joy and optimism have attracted commissions from major international clients including Adidas, Apple, Nike, Google, Tate London, New Yorker Magazine, Vogue International, Vanity Fair, Washington Post, and New York Times. Their immersive public artworks have been installed in prestigious locations such as Canary Wharf, London; Times Square, New York; and Sai Lau Kok Garden, Hong Kong.
“Brisbane means a lot to us because it's where we met while studying, sparking both our creative partnership and lasting friendship. The city's energy and community gave us the space to grow, experiment, and support each other from the very beginning.”
